The inspiration for this portfolio is Richard Powers' novel The Overstory  I will never look at trees - or forests - in the same way. Powers reveals how trees are social beings, communicating through gases released into the air and through underground fungal networks that carry nutrients and information.  Trees, in other words, talk.  They have memory, they share resources, they look after one another.  

But The Overstory is also about the human side of this relationship - how we connect to trees, and how often we destroy them in the name of consummerism and profit, disrupting the balance of ecosystems we barely understand. 

My work interprets these dual realms - "underground and over the air" .  Using multiple exposures, layering and intentional camera movement, I attempt to visualize the unseen networks.  The process, for me, is a way of imagining what tree to tree communication might look like if it were visible to the human eye.
